2006 Illinois Orphan Train Reunion
The Illinois Orphan Train Riders’ Conference was held on October 7, 2006 at the
beautiful, historical Stratford Inn in Sycamore, Illinois. Though attended by only a
handful of faithful members and interested parties, the meeting can be counted as a
success. We reminisced about past conferences and told the stories of the Riders
who have been so close to our hearts. Then, our speaker, Maureen Brady,
introduced us to the many facets of the wonderful research website produced by the
Church of Jesus Christ of the Later-Day Saints, www.familysearch.org. Even
attendees very familiar with this site came away with new and useful information.
Many thanks go to Shirley Howenstine for the wonderful work done for so many
years, with the help and support of her husband, Richard. Their dedication to the
Orphan Train Heritage Society of America and its mission is most appreciated.
Through her lectures, her influence in getting an Orphan Train story into Scott
Foresman text books, and her years of hosting the Illinois conference, Shirley has
educated many people about the era and the children and agencies involved.
